It’s time for another book review! I have been reading “The Help” for about 3 weeks, and I finally finished it a couple days ago. This book was absolutely incredible. I always love historical fiction (because I love history), and this book blew me away. Here is a short summary of the book:
Aibileen lives in Jackson, Mississippi during 1962 as a maid. She has always work diligently and without complaint, but recently her bitterness has grown unbearable. It is becoming harder for her to accept the role that society believes she must play. Aibileen’s friend, Minny, has never been timid about letting everyone know exactly how she feels about serving the white women. Now, she must keep secrets for her employer if she wants to keep the job she needs. Skeeter, a new college graduate and unmarried, has been dogged by her mother’s disapproval all her life. With tensions growing in the south, these three women come together to write a tell-all book about what it’s like to work as a black maid in the south. The result of this book could change everything for these women, but will it be worth the risk?
I watched The Help move when I was in middle school, and it was great. I am disappointed to say that I saw the movie before I read the book. It has actually been sitting on my shelf for several years just waiting to be read! Thank the Lord I finally got around the reading it, I had no idea what I was missing out on! Just to give you an idea of how incredible this book is, here is a quote from the front cover, “This could be one of the most important pieces of fiction since To Kill a Mockingbird … If you read only one book… let this be it.” (NPR.org) I agree with this quote 100%. “The Help” truly puts the 1960s, in the south, into perspective. It’s a great example of what happened on a daily basis during that time period. In my opinion it is important to remind ourselves of far we have come as a country.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in historical fiction and realistic fiction. Parents, I want to warn you that there is some swearing sprinkled throughout as well as one nude scene.
If you would like another opinion on the sexual content in books I found a fantastic website called book ninjas. This site allows you to search for any book you’d like, and it will tell you how much sexual content and profanity is in the book on a scale of 0-20 (0 being clean and 20 being the highest amount of both). Although, I could not find “The Help” on this website 😦 .
A short little update on my Camp NaNoWriMo word count! I set a goal of 30,000 for the month of April and I am already a day behind 😛 . I have been a lot busier over spring break than I thought I would be. Hopefully I will be able to catch up before school starts again! You can check out my progress here.
