This week marked the end of AP testing for me, forever!!! And to celebrate, I read a book 🙂 (yes I read an entire book in 2 days).
So this week I want to do a book review because this was an incredible book. Out of all the books I have done reviews on so far, this one blows them all out of the water. My favorite author/editor/friend, Nadine Brandes, highly recommended this book so I decided I should probably read it.
Here is a quick synopsis of the book, Unblemished by Sara Ella.
Eliyana can’t bear to look at her own reflection. What if that’s only one reflection though? What if there is another world entirely that mirrors her own? Eliyana is a high school student who struggles with her appearance every single day because of a birthmark that covers half of her face. She feels that no one could ever love her, except her mother, until she meets Joshua. Then everything turns upside down. When her mother doesn’t return home one day, and Joshua becomes her legal guardian, Eliyana finds herself in a situation she couldn’t possibly comprehend. On top of that, she is thrown into a world larger than she could’ve imagined and is expected to bring peace to the land. How is she supposed to save a whole world when she can’t even face her own reflection?
Doesn’t it sound fantastic?! As you have probably already guess, this is a fantasy book, and part of a trilogy. The second book, Unraveling, will release in July. Parents, please, please, please put this book in your kids’ hands. Not only is it filled with adventure, but it teaches such a valuable lesson of self value and the true meaning of beauty. With girls and boys being bombarded with what they are “supposed” to look like, hearing the truth about beauty is so important. This is one of the few books that I can honestly say gets that point across.
Sara Ella is amazing. This is her debut novel, and she won the Young People’s Literature award! How awesome is that?! I have created a small list of authors in which I will ALWAYS buy their books (a.k.a. as soon as their newest book is published, it is on my bookshelf 😀 ). That list is very small and selective (4 authors that are crazy good). I read the first 20 pages of Unblemished and she was already added to that list. I cannot say enough about how amazing this book is.
The biggest part of the book that I enjoyed is that it wasn’t predictable. With literature today, what I am seeing more and more often is that I can tell you exactly what’s going to happen at the end of the book. While I was reading Unblemished I could not—for the life of me—figure out what was going to happen! It was driving me insane! I didn’t know who to trust, or what was going to happen next. And you know what? I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT! This is how books should be written.
I also really enjoyed the fact that there was a love triangle and I didn’t hate it. I have never been a fan of love triangles, I think they are way too over done. But Sara Ella did it right. I didn’t even realize there was a right way to do it because I had never seen it before, but she did it perfectly. In fact, the love triangle made the story better. I am completely unable to say which guy I prefer because she made me love and hate them both.
Needless to say, I love this book. I love Sara Ella and the work that she does. This book is completely clean, and a great read. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
